The excuse for fun.
Is "I enjoyed it" or "I had fun" a legitimate excuse? especially when the fun is extracted by disregarding the essentials of the game. Is a terribly worded book with a good story a good book? Can it really be considered a good book if it requires you to disregard the medium itself? Does it matter if the story itself is good if the way it is conveyed makes it less meaningful? Can it still be good with inaccuracies in writing, a mis-written line can be the difference some cannot ignore.
What I am getting with this is, something which breaks under
the slightest of scrutiny isn't something good. I will judge you as a person
for the lack of attention and importance you paid to the 'art' than criticize
the 'art' itself at that point.
Just like in movies, where what's happening on screen
matters as much as the quality of the story. When it comes to games what
happens in gameplay matters as much when it comes to the overall quality. The
notion that only what happens in cutscenes matter is disingenuous one, it's not
like in other mediums the core of the medium can be ignored, why should it be
true for games. Why should I enjoy gameplay without context from the story?
It's purely mechanical enjoyment disjointed from meaning, at that point you
just induce meaning. Why should I enjoy story without relevance from gameplay?
as in why should I fckn play the game? Both of these alone are meaningless if
it must be 'art'. While one being exceptional can prop the other up, it loses
the right to be called great especially if the one that is not great is the one
that is not the core of the medium or the core of the ‘art’.
Do horse balls shrinking add anything? Does it add anything
to gameplay? Does it add anything to story? Is it a metaphor for the shrinking purpose of the main character, something meta? The more meaningless details you add the more meaningless details you
ignored and I expect stands out. There is a bare minimum to create a believable
world anything above that should serve purpose to gameplay or story. The fire
in farcry 2 affects gameplay. The horse shit in MGSV is a weapon with tactical
depth. Were the horse balls really worth the time and effort? Was it a better
time spent than focusing on the readily apparent problems with the game? And
finally did it make me enjoy the game more?
Now, You tell me I cannot criticize the badly designed
linear story segments because you enjoyed the game regardless.
Now, You tell me about the games that are just mechanically
broken and could've been so much more with a few tweaks, that I am not allowed
to criticize them because you enjoyed it i.e you didn't care enough.
Again, at that point it's not the game I will criticize but
your lack of passion.
Criticizing Art does not devalue it, disregarding art does.
Criticizing Art does not devalue it, disregarding art does.
